What Is TENS?
Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) uses low-voltage electrical currents delivered through skin electrodes to interrupt pain signals travelling to the brain. It is a safe, non-invasive, drug-free pain management tool widely used in physiotherapy.
How TENS Works
TENS works through two mechanisms. High-frequency TENS activates the pain gate mechanism, blocking pain signals in the spinal cord. Low-frequency TENS stimulates endorphin release -- the body's natural painkillers.
Conditions Treated with TENS
- Chronic back and neck pain
- Arthritis joint pain
- Post-surgical pain management
- Nerve pain (neuropathy)
- Muscle spasm and tension
- Fibromyalgia
