Physiotherapy Questions Answered
At Realign Rehab Clinic, we hear the same questions from new patients regularly. Here are honest answers to the most common physiotherapy questions.
What is physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession that uses evidence-based physical treatments -- manual therapy, exercise, electrotherapy, education -- to assess and treat movement disorders, injuries, and disability. We treat people of all ages for a vast range of conditions.
Is physiotherapy painful?
Physiotherapy should not be excessively painful. Some discomfort during treatment is normal (e.g., when working into a stiff joint or through a targeted exercise), but this should always be within tolerable limits. Good physiotherapy should not cause you to dread coming to sessions.
How many sessions will I need?
This depends entirely on the condition, severity, and your individual response. Simple acute injuries: 3-6 sessions. Chronic conditions: 8-12+ sessions. Post-surgical rehabilitation: 12-24+ sessions. We set realistic expectations at your initial assessment.
Do I need a referral from a doctor?
No -- you can self-refer to physiotherapy without a doctor's referral in India. However, for complex or post-surgical cases, a referral from your treating doctor or orthopaedic surgeon is helpful for coordination of care.
Will I need to do exercises at home?
Yes -- home exercises are an essential part of physiotherapy. In-clinic treatment provides the stimulus; home exercises maintain and build on it. Patients who do their home exercises consistently recover significantly faster.
What should I wear?
Comfortable, loose clothing that allows access to the affected area. If you have knee or hip problems, wear shorts or clothing that allows access to the leg.
Can physiotherapy help my condition?
Physiotherapy can help most musculoskeletal, neurological, and many systemic conditions. Contact us and we will honestly tell you whether we can help -- and if not, who can.
