Badminton: High-Intensity, High-Injury Sport
Badminton is the most popular racket sport in India and one of the most popular sports in Faridabad. It is also a high-injury sport — the explosive jumps, rapid direction changes, repetitive overhead smashes, and lunging movements place significant stress on the shoulder, knee, ankle, and lower back. Elite badminton players cover up to 6 km per match in short explosive bursts, with injury rates of 3–5 injuries per 1,000 hours of play.
Common Badminton Injuries
Shoulder Injuries: Rotator cuff tendinopathy and impingement from repetitive overhead smashing. Shoulder is the most commonly injured body part in badminton. Patellar Tendinopathy (Jumper's Knee): Repetitive jumping and landing overloads the patellar tendon. Ankle Sprain: Lateral ankle sprains from rapid direction changes. Very common. Achilles Tendinopathy: Repetitive explosive push-off. Knee Ligament Injuries: ACL tears from pivot movements. Lower Back Pain: Repetitive rotation and overhead extension.
Physiotherapy Treatment
Shoulder Rehabilitation
Rotator cuff and scapular stabiliser strengthening, manual therapy, and return-to-smashing protocols with progressive load. Stroke technique assessment to identify biomechanical risk factors.
Ankle Rehabilitation
After ankle sprain: early mobilisation, proprioception training, functional rehabilitation, and return-to-court with external support (strapping or bracing initially). Balance and agility training to prevent recurrence.
Patellar Tendinopathy
Heavy slow resistance programme (leg press, Spanish squats), load management, and gradual return to jumping activities using a symptom-monitoring protocol.
