What Is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) occurs when the median nerve is compressed as it passes through the carpal tunnel — the narrow passage in the wrist formed by the carpal bones and the transverse carpal ligament. CTS is the most common peripheral nerve entrapment, affecting 3–6% of adults. It is particularly prevalent among people who perform repetitive wrist and hand activities — computer users, assembly workers, drivers, and housewives in Faridabad.
Symptoms
Classic CTS symptoms include: numbness and tingling in the thumb, index, middle, and ring fingers; nocturnal symptoms that wake patients from sleep; hand weakness and difficulty gripping; dropping objects; pain radiating up the forearm. Symptoms typically ease with shaking the hand ('flick sign').
Physiotherapy Treatment for CTS
Neural Mobilisation
Median nerve mobilisation techniques ('nerve flossing') move the nerve through the carpal tunnel and forearm, reducing adhesions and improving neural gliding. This is one of the most effective physiotherapy interventions for CTS.
Carpal Tunnel Splinting
Neutral wrist splints worn at night keep the wrist in a position of minimal nerve pressure, significantly reducing nocturnal symptoms. Splinting is supported by strong evidence for mild-to-moderate CTS.
Manual Therapy
Carpal bone mobilisation and soft tissue release of the flexor retinaculum and forearm flexors can reduce carpal tunnel pressure and improve symptoms.
Ergonomic Assessment
Identifying and modifying the activities and postures causing CTS is essential for lasting recovery. We provide workplace ergonomic advice tailored to each patient's occupation.
Tendon Gliding Exercises
Specific exercises that glide the finger flexor tendons through the carpal tunnel independently of the median nerve help maintain tunnel patency and reduce adhesions.
CTS Physiotherapy vs. Surgery
Mild to moderate CTS responds well to physiotherapy (especially splinting + neural mobilisation). Surgery (carpal tunnel release) is reserved for severe CTS with muscle wasting or when conservative management fails. We can accurately assess severity and guide appropriate treatment decisions.
