Understanding Scoliosis
Scoliosis is a three-dimensional deformity of the spine involving lateral curvature, rotation, and usually changes to the normal sagittal curves. It is classified by Cobb angle (the degree of lateral curvature on X-ray). Most scoliosis is idiopathic (no known cause) and typically presents in adolescents during the growth spurt. Scoliosis affects approximately 2–3% of the population. Mild curves (under 25°) are monitored; moderate curves (25–45°) are treated with bracing and/or physiotherapy; severe curves (over 45°) may require surgery.
Physiotherapy-Specific Scoliosis Exercises (PSSE)
PSSE are a group of specialised exercise approaches designed for scoliosis — different from generic physiotherapy. The goals are: curve correction, preventing curve progression, improving posture and aesthetics, addressing associated pain, and improving breathing function. The most evidence-based PSSE approach is the Schroth Method.
The Schroth Method
Developed by Katharina Schroth in Germany, the Schroth Method uses three-dimensional breathing, postural correction, and rotational exercises tailored to each patient's specific curve pattern. Multiple studies show Schroth reduces Cobb angle progression and improves quality of life in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. It is included in SOSORT (Society on Scoliosis Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Treatment) guidelines as a recommended first-line treatment for moderate scoliosis.
Adult Scoliosis
Adults with scoliosis (degenerative or untreated idiopathic) often develop pain from asymmetric loading. We address pain management, core strengthening, posture, and respiratory function for adult scoliosis patients.
