Stroke: The Importance of Early Rehabilitation

Stroke is a leading cause of disability in India, affecting over 1.8 million people annually. The brain has remarkable plasticity — the ability to rewire and compensate — but this neuroplasticity is most active in the first weeks and months after stroke. This is why early, intensive physiotherapy is the single most important factor in determining how much function a stroke survivor recovers.

What Physiotherapy Treats After Stroke

Stroke can affect many functions: movement and strength on one side of the body (hemiplegia/hemiparesis), balance and coordination, walking ability (gait), spasticity (increased muscle tone), proprioception and sensory loss, and functional independence in daily activities.

Task-Specific Training

Practising the actual movements affected by stroke — standing, stepping, reaching, grasping — is the most effective way to drive neuroplasticity. The brain reorganises around the movements it repeatedly performs. Our therapists design repetitive, challenging task-specific programmes tailored to each patient's deficits.

Bobath / Neurodevelopmental Treatment (NDT)

NDT uses specific handling techniques to facilitate normal movement patterns and inhibit abnormal tone, retraining the nervous system to recruit muscles in the correct sequence.

Gait Rehabilitation

Restoring walking is usually the primary goal. We use treadmill training, overground gait training, parallel bars, and assistive devices as appropriate. Gait analysis identifies specific deficits (foot drop, hip circumduction, knee hyperextension) for targeted intervention.

Spasticity Management

Stretching, splinting, and positioning programmes manage spasticity and prevent contractures. We coordinate with the medical team for botulinum toxin injections where appropriate.

Upper Limb Rehabilitation

Constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT), mirror therapy, and functional electrical stimulation (FES) all have evidence for upper limb recovery after stroke. We use these techniques alongside standard task-specific training.
