Understanding Muscle Cramps
A muscle cramp is an involuntary, painful muscle contraction that can last seconds to minutes. Occasional cramps are normal, but frequent or severe cramps -- especially at night -- may indicate dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, circulatory problems, or nerve compression.
Common Causes
- Dehydration and electrolyte deficiencies (sodium, potassium, magnesium)
- Muscle fatigue from overtraining
- Poor circulation
- Nerve compression in the spine causing referred muscle cramping
- Certain medications (statins, diuretics)
- Underlying conditions: diabetes, peripheral artery disease, thyroid disorders
Physiotherapy Assessment
Our physiotherapists assess whether cramping has a musculoskeletal or neurological origin, or whether referral for blood work or vascular assessment is appropriate.
Treatment and Prevention
- Targeted stretching programme for affected muscle groups
- Hydration and nutrition guidance
- Graduated training load management for athletes
- Spinal assessment if nerve compression is suspected
